1998:Reform Party candidate and former professional wrestler Jesse "The Body" Ventura is elected governor of Minnesota. He serves one term.

1957:
A mixed-breed dog named Laika is the first living organism launched into space. She is carried aboard the Soviet Union's Sputnik 2 spacecraft.

1964:
Thanks to the recently passed 23rd Amendment, residents of Washington, D.C., cast their votes in a presidential election for the first time, helping to elect Democrat Lyndon B. Johnson over Republican Barry Goldwater.
