1933:President Franklin D. Roosevelt signs a proclamation ending Prohibition and warns against a return to “repugnant conditions.” Earlier in the day, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Utah ratified the 21st Amendment, which ended the alcohol ban.

2002: Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott commends Sen. Strom Thurmond’s 1948 pro-segregation presidential campaign at Thurmond’s 100th birthday party. Furor over the comment later forces Lott to resign his leadership position.
