1862: President Abraham Lincoln warns Confederate states to rejoin the Union, threatening to release all slaves in rebellious states as of the coming New Year's Day if they don't.
1975: Sara Jane Moore tries to shoot President Gerald Ford outside a San Francisco hotel. She misses by several feet.
