TODAY IN HISTORY


1937: Oxford Professor J.R.R. Tolkien publishes his first novel, The Hobbit. First printing: 1,500 copies. Sold to date: over 90 million.


1982: NFL players begin a 57-day strike. Seven regular-season games are canceled.



1983: Interior Secretary James Watt, already infamous for banning the Beach Boys from the National Mall, describes his staff as: “a black, a woman, two Jews and a cripple.” He resigns shortly thereafter.
