mullein
Mr. Valin was trying to create the first red-flowered version of verbascum, a common garden plant also known as a mullein, when he came up with a pretty amazing sky-blue variety instead.
Some believe mullein comes from a Latin root meaning "soft" (because of the plant's downy leaves); others think it may ultimately derive from a Celtic root meaning "yellow" (because of the yellow flowers of a common variety of the plant).
