DECEMBER 18

1965: NASA astronauts James Lovell and Frank Borman splash down in the Atlantic Ocean, completing a 14-day mission aboard the Gemini VII spacecraft that doubles the record for longest human spaceflight up to that time.

1966: Horror film star Boris Karloff takes on the role of a new villain as narrator of the television version of Dr. Seuss' children's story How the Grinch Stole Christmas, which airs for the first time on this day on CBS. The Grinch quickly becomes a hallmark of the holiday season.

1972: President Richard Nixon announces that the U.S. military will carry out "Operation Linebacker II," a series of bombings over the Christmas holidays, as a consequence of peace talks breaking down with North Vietnam. The relentless campaign targets the heavily populated areas of Hanoi and Haiphong, killing an estimated 1,600 North Vietnamese civilians; some argue that the bombing does seem to bring North Vietnam back to the negotiating table and closer to the Paris Peace Accords of January 1973.

1956:Japan admitted to UN

1892:The first performance of Tchaikovsky's ballet The Nutcracker is held at the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia.

1271:Kublai Khan renames his empire "Yuan" ( yun), officially marking the start of the Yuan Dynasty of China.
