1998:Former professional wrestler Jesse "The Body" Ventura is elected governor of Minnesota as a Reform Party candidate, defeating two seasoned political opponents — Minnesota Attorney General Hubert Humphrey III and St. Paul Mayor Norm Coleman.

1964: Voters in the District of Columbia take part in a presidential election for the first time, following the ratification of the 23rd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution three years earlier. The overwhelmingly Democratic voters in D.C. contribute three electoral votes to help elect President Lyndon B. Johnson in a landslide victory over Sen. Barry Goldwater, the Republican nominee.

1976: Prom night will never be the same again, after Carrie hits cinemas in the United States. Based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, Brian De Palma's horror film stars Sissy Spacek as the vengeful, telekinetically gifted teenage outcast Carrie White.

1957:Soviet Union launches first animal into space-a dog named Laika- aboard Sputnik 2.


1913:United States introduces income tax.

1911:Chevrolet officially enters the automobile market in competition with the Ford Model T.
