1956:In game 5 against the Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Yankees pitcher Don Larsen throws the only perfect game in World Series history. It remains one of only 23 perfect games in all of Major League Baseball history.
1998: Author José Saramago is the first Portuguese writer to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature.
2004: Amid a media frenzy, domestic do-it-yourself guru Martha Stewart reports to Alderson Federal Prison Camp in West Virginia to begin serving a five-month sentence. Stewart had been convicted of lying to investigators about the December 2001 sale of her ImClone Systems stock.
