OCTOBER 26

1955:Ngo Dinh Diem declares South Vietnam to be a republic with himself as its first president, following a national referendum that questionably awarded him 98.2 percent of the vote. He would be overthrown and executed in November 1963.

1825: New York Governor DeWitt Clinton presides over the opening ceremonies for his special project, the Erie Canal, a $7 million waterway to provide transportation between the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean via the Hudson River.

1965: The Beatles are the first rock 'n' roll group to receive Members of the British Empire medals from Queen Elizabeth II, accepting the distinguished honor at Buckingham Palace. According to John Lennon, the nervous musicians smoke marijuana in the bathroom before the ceremony.

1977:The last natural case of smallpox is discovered in Merca district, Somalia.

1861: Pony Express ceases operations.

1825: Upstate New York, The Erie Canal opens connecting Lake Erie and the Hudson River.
