2002:The "Beltway Sniper" shoots and kills 55-year-old James Martin in the parking lot of a grocery store in Glenmont, Md., beginning a string of attacks that kill 10 people and critically injure three others in the Washington, D.C., area. John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo would be convicted of the murders; Muhammad would be executed by lethal injection in November 2009.
1919: President Woodrow Wilson suffers a massive stroke in the White House that leaves him partially paralyzed. Only days earlier, Wilson had completed an exhausting tour across the United States in support of the Versailles Treaty and the League of Nations. Wilson would never fully recover but would serve out the remainder of his term; he would die in 1924.
1963: Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Sandy Koufax sets a World Series record by striking out 15 New York Yankees batters in a single game, helping the Dodgers to a 5-2 victory in Game 1.
1967:Thurgood Marshall is sworn in as the first African-American justice of United States Supreme Court.
1950:Peanuts by Charles M. Schulz is first published.
1608:The first telescope is demonstrated by Hans Lippershey of Middelburg.
1187:Jerusalem is captured by Sultan Saladin after 88 years of Crusader rule.
