TODAY IN HISTORY


OCTOBER 1

 1946:The International Military Tribunal issues verdicts against high-ranking former Nazis in Nuremberg, Germany. Twelve former Nazi leaders are sentenced to death, including Joachim von Ribbentropp and Hermann Goering. Seven others are given prison terms ranging from 10 years to life, while three are acquitted.

1890: President Benjamin Harrison approves a bill creating Yosemite National Park in California's Sierra Nevada mountain range, thanks to the preservation campaign of environmentalists such as John Muir and members of the Sierra Club.

1962: "Heeeeeere's Johnny!" Johnny Carson makes his debut as regular host of The Tonight Show on NBC, replacing Jack Paar. Carson would host the show until his retirement on May 22, 1992.

1971:Walt Disney World opens near Orlando, Florida, United States.

1800:France secretly attains Louisiana from Spain in a treaty.


1891: In the U.S. state of California, Stanford University opens its doors.

1869:The first postcards are issued (Vienna)
