THE FIRST WORD

pediculosis
Head lice, also called pediculosis, has been around since the dawn of man. The old joke goes that "Adam had 'em."
Pediculosis is related to the old word "pedicle" (a louse) which may be linked to an Indo-European root meaning "to break wind." At one point people believed that lice spontaneously generated from dirt or from sweat.
