1997:Elton John's tribute to his good friend, the late Princess Diana — "Candle In the Wind 1997" — sells nearly 660,000 copies on the first day of its release in the United Kingdom alone. It will become the best-selling single of all time.
1821: The Latin American nations of Nicaragua, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Costa Rica declare independence from colonial Spain, briefly joining the Mexican Empire before becoming the short-lived independent Federal Republic of Central America. Sept. 15 marks the start of Hispanic Heritage Month.
1982: Al Neuharth founds the national newspaper USA Today, published by Gannett. Although initially criticized for having more color photographs than journalistic depth, the newspaper would become among the most widely read in the nation.
1997:Larry Page and Sergey Brin decide that BackRub isn't a great name for their search engine - so they register Google.com.
1952:Previously a colony of Italy, the United Nations turns over Eritrea to Ethiopia.
1981: Sandra Day O'Connor approved to become first female justice Supreme Court of the United States
1968: First spaceship to fly around moon & return to Earth, Soviet Zond 5 is launched
