1997:K.R. Narayanan is sworn in as president of India. He is the first member of the "untouchable" Dalit caste group to hold the presidency.

1985: Hollywood leading man Rock Hudson confirms via press release that he is suffering from AIDS, becoming the first major celebrity to publicly admit to having acquired the disease.

1994: As President Bill Clinton looks on at the White House, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and King Hussein of Jordan sign the Washington Declaration, a peace declaration ending 46 years of war between the neighboring nations.
