 1979:Pope John Paul II returns to his native Poland for a pastoral visit, marking the first papal visit to a communist country. During his 26-year-long pontificate, Pope John Paul II would visit a total of 129 nations, by far the most of any Catholic pontiff.

1953: Queen Elizabeth II is crowned in Westminster Abbey, 16 months after she succeeded her late father, King George VI, as monarch of Great Britain. The queen celebrates her diamond jubilee this year, signifying 60 years on the British throne.

1997: Timothy McVeigh is found guilty on all counts for planning and executing the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, which claimed the lives of 168 people. McVeigh would be executed on June 11, 2001.
