 1997:Australian distance swimmer Susie Maroney, 22, braves harsh winds in a 24-hour, 112-mile swim across the Florida Straits, becoming the first person to swim from Havana, Cuba, to Key West, Fla.

1957: Auto racing legend A.J. Foyt scores his first professional victory, in a U.S. Automobile Club midget car race in Kansas City, Mo. Foyt will go on to win 67 Indy Car championships, including four victories in the Indianapolis 500.

2002: Former President Jimmy Carter arrives in Havana, Cuba, for a five-day visit with Cuban leader Fidel Castro, becoming the first sitting or former U.S. president to visit the island nation since Castro's rise to power in 1959.
1949:The Soviet Union lifts its Blockade of Berlin.

1935:Bill Wilson and Dr. Bob Smith get together for the first meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous
