1932:Gangster Al Capone is imprisoned in the U.S. penitentiary in Atlanta, having been convicted of income tax evasion. Capone would be transferred to Alcatraz in August 1934.

1959: Henry Mancini, Domenico Modugno, Perry Como, Count Basie and Ella Fitzgerald are among the winners at the first Grammy Awards, held at the Beverly Hills Hilton in Los Angeles to recognize achievement in the recording industry.
