1933:Nellie Ross becomes the first female director of the United States Mint, a post she will hold for 20 years. In 1925, Ross had also become the first woman elected as governor of a U.S. state, Wyoming.

1952: Air Force Lt. Col. William Benedict and Lt. Col. Joseph Fletcher land their C-47 aircraft at the geographic North Pole. When Fletcher steps out of the plane, he becomes the first person to indisputably stand on the precise location of the North Pole.
1991:The show "Dallas" on CBS has its final episode after running for 13 seasons.

1936:Joe DiMaggio makes his major league debut against St. Louis w/ 3 hits and 3 runs scored.

1765:The first US medical college opens in Philadelphia.

1959:The first Grammy Awards are announced.

1923:The first nonstop transcontinental flight (New York-San Diego) completed
