JANUARY 10
1958:Fourteen-year-old prodigy Bobby Fischer wins the United States Chess Championship for the first time, winning or drawing against 13 seasoned opponents at the Manhattan Chess Club.

1870: John D. Rockefeller incorporates Standard Oil Company in Ohio. Barely a decade later, the company would achieve a near monopoly on oil production in the United States, and its profits would make Rockefeller the nation's first billionaire.

1949: RCA Records announces the production of a new 7-inch vinyl record to be played at 45 rpm. The 45, with enough space for a song on either side, will become ubiquitous during the rise of rock 'n' roll music.
