JANUARY 9
1942:Boxer Joe Louis, the "Brown Bomber," knocks out Buddy Baer, younger brother of former heavyweight champ Max Baer, in the first round at Madison Square Garden to defend his heavyweight title for the 20th time. Louis donated all of his winnings to the Navy Relief Society. The next day, he enlisted in the Army.

1493: Italian explorer Christopher Columbus reports in his journal that he has spotted three mermaids in the waters near the present-day Dominican Republic, remarking that the creatures are "not half as beautiful as they are painted." Unfortunately for Columbus and his crew, the mermaids were most likely manatees, large aquatic mammals weighing more than 1,000 pounds.

1972: In a telephone conference from the Bahamas, reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes announces that Clifford Irving's alleged autobiography of Hughes is a hoax. Irving had received a $750,000 advance from McGraw-Hill for the book.
