1950:“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” sung by Gene Autry, makes it to the top of the Billboard pop charts and is the first No. 1 hit of the 1950s. Who’s laughing now, Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen?

1887: English-born adventurer Thomas Stevens arrives in San Francisco on a steamer from Japan, having become the first man to bicycle around the world. Stevens left San Francisco on April 22, 1884, and rode his 50-inch Columbia Standard bicycle eastward for three years, cycling about 13,500 miles across the United States, Europe and Asia.

1896: The first edition of Fannie Farmer’s Boston Cooking-School Cookbook is published. It soon became a best seller and taught ordinary homemakers to understand the science of measurement and nutrition in preparing food.
