1958: Sir Edmund Hillary, the New Zealand explorer best known for having reached the summit of Mt. Everest in 1953, successfully leads the first overland expedition to arrive at the South Pole since the expeditions of Roald Amundsen and Robert F. Scott in 1911-1912.
1936: Jazz violinist Joe Venuti's "Stop, Look, and Listen" is the first track to top Hit Parade, Billboard magazine's inaugural pop music chart based on national album sales.

1994: Newt Gingrich becomes speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, ending four decades of Democratic majority in the House. Gingrich is currently campaigning for the Republican Party's presidential nomination
