1991:Former Egyptian Foreign Minister Boutros Boutros-Ghali is unanimously selected by the U.N. Security Council to become the next secretary-general of the United Nations.

1934: Seventeen-year-old Ella Fitzgerald enters Amateur Night at the Apollo Theater in Harlem and brings down the house with a rendition of "The Object of My Affection," setting the "First Lady of Song" on the path to jazz vocal stardom.

1976: "Yo, Adrian!" Sylvester Stallone stars as down-on-his-luck boxer Rocky Balboa in Rocky, which premieres on this day in New York. The film will be nominated for 10 Academy Awards and will win for best picture, best director and best film editing. Stallone, who wrote the original screenplay, will write and star in five more Rocky films, most recently Rocky Balboa in 2006.
