1990:"Iron Lady" Margaret Thatcher announces that she is resigning as British prime minister. With three consecutive terms in office, Thatcher is the longest-serving prime minister since Lord Liverpool in the 19th century, and Britain's only female prime minister.

1963: President John F. Kennedy is assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald while riding in a motorcade through downtown Dallas. Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson is sworn in as president less than two hours later, aboard Air Force One at Dallas Love Field airport.

1995: "To infinity and beyond!" The critically acclaimed Toy Story is released in the United States. The groundbreaking Pixar-Disney film, with Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of Andy's beloved toys, is the first full-length feature created using only computer animation.
