1307: According to legend, Swiss folk hero William Tell shoots
an apple off his son's head with a crossbow, thus saving both Tell and
his son from execution.
1970: Two-time Nobel Prize-winning scientist Linus Pauling
causes a stir in the medical establishment by contending that taking
large amounts of vitamin C can reduce a person's chance of contracting the common cold. Pauling's belief in the effectiveness of megadoses of vitamin C is now shared by millions of people.
