1991:Anglican Church envoy Terry Waite and American University in Beirut professor Thomas Sutherland are freed after being held for four and six years, respectively, by Shiite extremists in Beirut, Lebanon.

1307: According to legend, Swiss folk hero William Tell shoots an apple off his son's head with a crossbow, thus saving both Tell and his son from execution.

1970: Two-time Nobel Prize-winning scientist Linus Pauling causes a stir in the medical establishment by contending that taking large amounts of vitamin C can reduce a person's chance of contracting the common cold. Pauling's belief in the effectiveness of megadoses of vitamin C is now shared by millions of people.
