1990:Crown Prince Akihito is crowned as the 125th emperor of Japan, succeeding his father, the late Emperor Hirohito, on the Chrysanthemum Throne.

1955: "Johnny B. Goode" singer Chuck Berry is named the year's most promising R&B artist in Billboard's annual DJ poll.

1977: Ernest Morial is elected as the first African American mayor of New Orleans. Exactly eight years later, another major U.S. city marks a historic milestone, when Xavier Suarez is elected as the first Cuban American mayor of Miami.
