TODAY IN HISTORY

NOVEMBER 10
1996:Dan Marino of the Miami Dolphins throws a pass to O.J. McDuffie in a game against the Indianapolis Colts, becoming the first NFL quarterback to complete more than 50,000 yards passing in his career. Marino will retire after the 1999 season with 61,361 yards passing. Marino is second only to Brett Favre (71,838 yards) for total career passing yards.

1928: Notre Dame upsets Army 12-6 at Yankee Stadium, after Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne delivers his famous "win one for the Gipper" speech during halftime. Hollywood actor and future U.S. president Ronald Reagan will immortalize the line by portraying former Notre Dame player George Gipp, who died of pneumonia in 1920, in the 1940 film Knute Rockne, All-American.

1975: The SS Edmund Fitzgerald, a freighter containing a full cargo of iron ore pellets, disappears along with its crew of 29 people during a storm on Lake Superior. Canadian singer Gordon Lightfoot immortalizes the disaster in the tune "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald."
