TODAY IN HISTORY

1963:New York Yankees catcher Elston Howard is the first African American baseball player to be named most valuable player of the American League. Following Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle, Howard is also the third consecutive New York Yankee to win the prestigious award.

2000: First lady Hillary Rodham Clinton is elected to the U.S. Senate from New York, becoming the first spouse of a U.S president to win public office.

2006: Keith Ellison is elected as the first Muslim congressman in U.S. history, winning a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives for Minnesota's 5th Congressional District. The same election also sees the first two Buddhists elected to the House — Mazie Hirono from Hawaii and Hank Johnson from Georgia.
