1991:Five U.S. presidents gather for the first time, as current President George H.W. Bush and former presidents Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford and Richard Nixon meet to dedicate the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif.

1958: The son of a poor Italian farmer becomes the leader of the world's Roman Catholics, as Cardinal Angelo Roncalli becomes Pope John XXIII at St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City.

1979: Hundreds of revolutionary student supporters of the conservative Shiite cleric Ayatollah Khomeini storm the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, demanding the extradition of the deposed Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, then receiving medical treatment in the United States. Fifty-two American hostages will be held for 444 days, until Jan. 20, 1981, the day of President Ronald Reagan's inauguration.
