TODAY IN HISTORY


OCTOBER 4
1927:Sculptor Gutzon Borglum begins creating one of the most famous memorials in the United States, as workers begin to carve the faces of four of America's most respected presidents on Mount Rushmore. It will take more than 14 years for Borglum and 400 workers to complete the 60-foot-tall granite visages of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln in the Black Hills National Forest in South Dakota.

1957: Sputnik 1 is launched into orbit by the Soviet Union, beginning the space age as Earth's first artificial satellite. With a diameter of only 23 inches, Sputnik 1 will orbit at about 18,000 miles per hour; its accompanying rocket booster is visible from Earth.

1976: Barbara Walters becomes the first woman to coanchor an evening news program, joining Harry Reasoner behind the desk of the ABC Evening News.
