OCTOBER 1
1961:In the last game of the season, New York Yankee slugger Roger Maris breaks the home run record set by former Yankee great Babe Ruth. Maris' 61st home run comes in the season's 162nd game, leading detractors to note that Ruth's record was set when the season had 154 games.

1903: Cy Young pitches for the Boston Americans (later known as the Boston Red Sox) in the first game of the modern World Series of Major League Baseball, against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Although the Pirates win the opening game 7-3, the Americans will win the overall series, five games to three.

1908: Henry Ford's Model T goes on the market, produced at the Ford Motor Company's Piquette Avenue Plant in Detroit. The car, nicknamed the Tin Lizzie, sells for $825 and is the first affordable automobile for ordinary Americans.
