1998:Actor Charlton Heston becomes president of the National Rifle Association in an attempt to boost the image of the pro-firearms lobbying group.

1968: Escaped convict James Earl Ray, the prime suspect in the April 4 assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., is arrested by Scotland Yard at London’s Heathrow Airport.

1978: Naomi James docks in Dartmouth, England, setting a new solo round-the-world sailing record after circumnavigating the globe in 272 days on the 53-foot Express Crusader yacht. James will be made a dame commander of the Order of the British Empire for her achievement.
