1965:Astronaut Ed White becomes the second man and the first American to “walk” in space, spending 23 minutes tethered outside the Gemini 4 capsule. Gemini 4 is also the first American multi-day space flight, as White and command pilot James McDivitt spend four days in orbit.

1888: Ernest Thayer’s baseball poem “Casey at the Bat” is published anonymously in the San Francisco Examiner, earning the author $5 and immortalizing Mighty Casey’s joyless strikeout in Mudville.

1968: Pop artist Andy Warhol is shot and critically injured by radical feminist Valerie Solanas, author of the SCUM Manifesto, inside Warhol’s studio, the Factory, in New York.
