TODAY IN HISTORY

APRIL 16,
1972:The giant pandas Ling-Ling and Hsing-Hsing, gifts from the government of China following President Richard Nixon’s historic visit, arrive at the National Zoo in Washington. Until their respective deaths in the 1990s, the beloved pandas will attract millions of zoo-goers each year.

1912: Harriet Quimby, the first American woman to earn a pilot’s license, flies from Dover, England, to Calais, France, becoming the first female aviator to cross the English Channel.

2003: Basketball legend Michael Jordan plays his final NBA game, a 107-87 loss for the Washington Wizards against the Philadelphia 76ers at the First Union Center in Philadelphia.
