APRIL 15
1955:Ray Kroc opens his first McDonald's fast food franchise in Des Plaines, Ill. The menu includes hamburgers for 15 cents and french fries for 10 cents.

1912: Margaret Brown, an American socialite later called the "Unsinkable Molly Brown," escapes the sinking of the ocean liner Titanic, famously taking charge of lifeboat No. 6's search for survivors. The Titanic had collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic the night before, taking 1,517 of her 2,240 passengers to their deaths.

1947: Jackie Robinson becomes the first African American athlete in Major League Baseball, playing first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers at Ebbets Field in a game against the Boston Braves.
