1865:Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth shoots President Abraham Lincoln at a performance of Our American Cousin at Ford’s Theatre in Washington. Booth flees from the theater, shouting the Virginia state motto, “Sic semper tyrannis” (“Thus always to tyrants”). The mortally wounded Lincoln will die the next morning, the first U.S. president to be assassinated. Booth will be captured and shot several weeks later.
1828: After working on the project for 26 years, Noah Webster publishes the first edition of his definitive An American Dictionary of the English Language, establishing the correct spelling and pronunciation of thousands of words in the American English lexicon.
1969: At the 41st Annual Academy Awards, the best actress award results in a tie between Barbra Streisand and Katharine Hepburn for their respective performances in Funny Girl and The Lion in Winter; both actresses received exactly 3,030 votes.
