APRIL 10
1866:Diplomat and animal rights advocate Henry Bergh founds the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the oldest animal welfare agency in the United States, in New York City.

1959: Crown Prince Akihito of Japan (now the Emperor Akihito) marries Michiko Shoda in Tokyo’s Imperial Palace. Empress Michiko is the first commoner to marry into the Japanese imperial family.

1970: Paul McCartney releases a “self-interview” to the press, unofficially announcing that the Beatles have broken up.
