1974:Hank Aaron of the Atlanta Braves breaks Babe Ruth's long-standing career home run record, hitting his 715th homer during a game against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium.1986: Actor and filmmaker Clint Eastwood is elected mayor of his adopted hometown, the seaside city of Carmel, Calif., with over 72 percent of the vote. Despite his civic duties, Eastwood will complete two films — directing and starring in Heartbreak Ridge and directing Bird — while in office.
1992: Tennis great Arthur Ashe, the first African American man to win a Grand Slam title, announces that he has AIDS, acquired from a blood transfusion a decade earlier. He will die less than a year later, at age 49.
