APRIL 7
1949:The Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein musical South Pacific, starring Mary Martin and Ezio Pinza and based on James Michener’s Tales of the South Pacific, opens at the Majestic Theatre on Broadway.

1862: The Battle of Shiloh, one of the Civil War’s bloodiest conflicts, concludes when the Union Army under Gen. Ulysses S. Grant defeats the Confederate Army under Gen. Albert Johnston and Gen. P.T. Beauregard near Shiloh, Tenn.

1940: As part of the Post Office Department’s Famous Americans series, educator Booker T. Washington becomes the first African American to appear on a U.S. postage stamp.
