1996:FBI agents raid Ted Kaczynski's isolated cabin near Lincoln, Mont., and arrest the suspected Unabomber, who had killed three people and injured 23 others in mail bombings carried out over 18 years.

1882: In St. Louis, outlaw Jesse James is fatally shot in the back of the head by Robert Ford, a member of the James Gang who wanted to collect the $10,000 reward for the outlaw's death.

1948: President Harry Truman signs the Foreign Assistance Act of 1948 into law, approving the distribution of aid to postwar Europe. Commonly known as the Marshall Plan after U.S. Secretary of State George C. Marshall, the program will provide more than $13 billion to help the economic recovery of 17 countries by 1951.
