1942:Enrico Fermi and his colleagues produce sustainable nuclear energy through a controlled atomic fission chain reaction at the University of Chicago. The discovery, part of the Manhattan Project, will lead to the development of the atomic bomb and nuclear power.
1763: The Touro Synagogue, named for Cantor Isaac Touro, is dedicated by members of the Jewish community of Newport, R.I. It is now the oldest existing synagogue in the United States.
1859: Militant abolitionist John Brown is executed for treason in Charles Town—then part of Virginia. Brown declares before his execution that “the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away but with blood.” The Civil War will begin less than a year and a half later.
