OCTOBER 11
1975:"Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!" Comedian George Carlin hosts the sketch comedy show Saturday Night Live in its debut episode on NBC. Janis Ian, Billy Preston and Andy Kaufman also appear as guests in the premiere.

1890: The Daughters of the American Revolution is founded in Washington, D.C., to promote historic preservation and patriotism. The society is open to women whose ancestors participated in the United States' struggle for independence.

1986:
President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev meet in Reykjavik, Iceland, to discuss reducing the number of nuclear-armed missiles in their respective arsenals. The talks fall apart when Reagan refuses to consider limiting testing of the Strategic Defense Initiative, nicknamed "Star Wars."
