OCTOBER 1
1949:Revolutionary leader Mao Zedong proclaims the creation of the People's Republic of China as a communist nation with himself as its head of state.
1961: Roger Maris of the New York Yankees hits his 61st home run of the season during a game against the Boston Red Sox, breaking the record Babe Ruth set 34 years earlier of 60 homers in a single season. Ruth fans are quick to note, however, that Major League Baseball's regular season had been lengthened by eight games since Ruth set his record in 1927.
1971: Walt Disney World opens in Orlando, Fla. It will become the world's largest and most visited resort. An additional theme park dedicated to technology and culture, known as EPCOT Center, will open on the same date in 1982.
