2004:Actor Christopher Reeve, best known for playing Superman in four blockbuster films, dies of heart failure in Westchester, N.Y. Reeve was paralyzed from the neck down after a 1995 horse riding accident, yet continued his acting career and became a strong advocate for people with spinal cord injuries and a proponent of stem cell research. He was 52.

1976: At 98, Dimitrion Yordanidis of Greece runs a 26-mile course from Marathon to Athens, Greece, in 7 hours and 33 minutes, becoming the oldest man listed by the Guinness Book of World Records to finish a marathon.

1973: Spiro T. Agnew resigns as vice president of the United States after pleading no contest to a charge of federal income tax evasion. President Richard Nixon will appoint Rep. Gerald Ford of Michigan to replace Agnew.
