APRIL 15

1947:Jackie Robinson’s debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers breaks Major League Baseball’s color barrier. He scores the winning run in his team’s 5-3 defeat of the Boston Braves.

1912: Captain Arthur Rostron’s Carpathia comes to the position in the Atlantic where the Titanic called for help. He finds about 700 survivors in lifeboats.

1955: Tax returns are due this day for the first time, after a new law moves the previous March 15 deadline up a month.
