Forty years ago today, on April 13, 1970, Apollo 13 Commander Jim Lovell and Command Module Pilot John Swigert uttered those infamous words, as they informed NASA that there had been a rupture in one of the oxygen tanks of their spacecraft’s Service Module. As a result, this planned third excursion to the moon’s surface would be aborted, while America collectively prayed for the safe return of Lovell, Swigert and Lunar Module pilot, Fred Haise.For the next four days, the world held their breath. Finally, on April 17, the crew made their safe return to Earth. Here is a look at some of the BBC coverage of the event:
