1964:Martin Luther King Jr. accepts the Nobel Peace Prize, declaring, “The beauty of genuine brotherhood and peace is more precious than diamonds or silver or gold.”

1906: President Theodore Roosevelt becomes the first American to win the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in ending the Russo-Japanese War.

1931: Jane Addams becomes the first American woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts helping women and the poor.
