1941:President Franklin Roosevelt calls the attack on Pearl Harbor an “unprovoked and dastardly attack” and declares Dec. 7, 1941, “a date which will live in infamy.” Just 33 minutes after his speech, Congress declares war against Japan.

1980: Mark David Chapman fatally shoots John Lennon outside the former Beatle’s New York apartment building. Lennon was 40.

1987: President Ronald Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev sign a treaty calling for the destruction of existing nuclear weapons.
