1947:Marlon Brando and Jessica Tandy star in Tennessee Williams’ play A Streetcar Named Desire in its debut on Broadway.

1964: Nearly 800 students at the University of California in Berkeley are arrested after mass sit-ins in an administration building.

1967: Christiaan Barnard performs the first human heart transplant on Louis Washkansky in Cape Town, South Africa. The patient survives 18 days with the new heart.
