CONSUMER TIP FROM CONSUMER REPORTS

Storing your stuff? Check your policy.
If you have to put possessions
in a storage facility, read the
contract to verify that they'll
be protected by insurance,
the Insurance Information
Institute advises. Determine
exactly what's covered. Also
 check your homeowners
 or renters insurance policy;
 some provide off-premises
protection, though it is often
limited to 10 percent of
the total coverage amount.
Such protection generally
does not cover damage from
floods, earthquakes, mold
and mildew, vermin, or poor
maintenance. There may also
be limits on coverage for
stored valuables, including
art, antiques, jewelry, and
furs. Finally,make a thorough
inventory of the items you're
storing, preferably with
photos or video.
